Starting a Watch Collection

Collecting watches is a hobby enjoyed by many people. If you are thinking of starting your own collection, you need to know several things that would help you to identify good pieces from bad ones. Be sure to inspect each item that comes your way so that you would be able to better determine the watch’s value.

Take a close and careful look at every part of the watch to check it for signs of age. If it is a truly old collectible item, it should appear rather worn and tarnished with symptoms of wear on its bands, dials, and face. It should have a few scratches as well. Sometimes, shop owners may polish or refurbish their old watches. Though doing this will certainly make the watches look more attractive, it can also significantly reduce the value of the items. It would be more profitable for you and your collection if you purchase an old watch that has not been polished since these scratches and various distinguishing marks can add value to the object. Furthermore, make sure that the old watch still has its original band or a band that is at least as old as the watch.

Take great care of the watches in your collection so that you would be able to get years of use out of them as well as increase their value. Later on, you may wish to sell off some of the items to other collectors or you may pass them on to a family member who will be able to provide them with the same care you have given the watches.
